Wechiau Hippo Sanctuary: (Upper West) Nestled in a woodland savanna, Wechiau located north western corner of the country famous for its Hippo game found in the Black Volta river, however several other animals especially reptiles, birds and bats are a common scene. A visitor will also have the benefit of having a feel of the xylophone played in traditional music and experience the local culture relatively different from most parts of Ghana. To have a good taste of your visit, an overnight stay would be great as hippos are seen mostly in the early mornings and evenings. There local styled lodges with drinks and food to be arranged. You can also buy from local groceries and eating places. The best time of visit in order see hippos is in the dry season; between November and June. The river safari take-off point is 19km from the main town.
Getting there: Public transport is available from Ga or Wa to Wechiau. You can rent a bicycle or hire a taxi from Wechiau to the Sanctuary. In a private car from Wa, take the road near Upland Hotel to Vieri at a T junction and take right Tanvaare also T-junction and take left to Wechiau , 46km away.
